Discharge in Early Pregnancy

Vaginal discharge in early pregnancy is very common. Many women do not realize this discharge as an early sign of conception. Some misunderstand this white, thin and clear discharge as some sort of an infection. However, it is not indicative of any infection as long as the color is white and without any itchy feeling.

Vaginal discharge happens due to some changes that your body goes through during pregnancy. Although you may experience occasional and mild discharge throughout the year regardless of pregnancy, the frequency and amount increases when you become pregnant. As you come closer to your due date, you may experience more increment in the discharge, which is normal. Vaginal discharge may start even before you miss your period due to pregnancy. Often times it is accompanied with frequent urination which may give you suspicion about your pregnancy.

It is important to understand the causes of discharge during pregnancy as not all discharges are harmless. Implantation is the process that your body goes through when you become pregnant. It is a process when the egg passes down through your uterus and attaches itself to the uterine wall. As a result of implantation several changes takes place in your cervical area. Your cervix creates a mucus plug which acts as a barrier between your baby and any outside bacteria or toxic substance. The increased flow of blood in your pelvic area combined with old vaginal tissue and some harmless vaginal bacteria is passed through the vagina which you see in the form of a discharge. This is known as leucorrhea.

Normally the discharge during early pregnancy is white and milk like fluid. It does not have any foul odor and usually odorless. These are all quite common and not a cause of concern. However, it may become a concerning issue if you see the color changes from white to green or red and started smelling really foul. These are signs of possible infection. You should call your practitioner to check your condition if any of these symptoms occurs. Other concerns are burning and itchy sensation, rashes in the vaginal area. These are also signs of sexually transmitted diseases and needs immediate medical treatment.

Vaginal discharge may be uncomfortable during early pregnancy but it is nothing to be treated with any medication. Wearing panty liners may help when you feel excessive discharge. You should wear cotton panties and tight fitting pants. Also tampons and feminine hygiene protective measures that have chemicals should be avoided. Keeping the vaginal area clean will help with uncomforting discharge.
